Ezio Vergani - Osnago, Italy (just outside Milan)

Ezio is an old friend of Steve’s from highschool. While attending the school as a foreign exchange student, Ezio, introduced him to a sport he grew to love…soccer. Steve not only played soccer, but coached it as well. Many years passed before the two were reunited but thanks to the help of social networking and computers, they finally did. Ezio visited Steve and his family several times in Jacksonville. And, fortunately enough, Steve’s daughters were able to visit Ezio in Italy and continue to remain in touch with him to this day. This wonderful friend organized a soccer match in Steve’s honor.

I always had a fantasy that I would bring Steve out to see and share my world in Colorado in the way he had shared his life and home in Florida with me. Sadly, that never happened. But yesterday to honor him and “bring him to the mountains” , I went to a place where I knew that I would have taken Steve when he did come out to these mountains where I live. Years ago, I had collected hundreds of tiny seashells from the beach. Can’t imagine why or why I kept them in a box for over 30 years but yesterday, I took them with me and high in the Rockies, above the plains visible in the distance looking toward Florida, I made a medicine wheel from the shells and placed two “Brother Beads” in the center. His spirit lives in these mountains as surely as it lives on the beach by the sea. The world will always be blessed because of what he was and how his spirit lives on in all of those of us he touched and the legacy he created. Thanks Steve for a great day and a great gift in my life!
